Once upon a time, in the distant east, there lived a Princess who never smiled. She was beautiful and bright. Though her three suitors, Kazue, Chi, and Akio, were all born into rich and powerful families, she never wanted to know them. On her 18th birthday, the King called the three suitors and told them to fill a big, empty room with anything bought with only one silver coin given to each of them. The three left the room and went to the market.
Kazue came back to the room first. He bought several baskets of papers. He made to fill a part of the room with all the papers he carried. Princess said nothing. Then came Chi. He appeared with many, many straws. Straw was cheap and easy to find. Chi filled the room so well that not even air could come in, but still, the top of the room was quite empty. Princess nodded politely. When Akio came back, he had nothing in his hands. Kazue and Chi thought that Akio, the youngest one, couldn’t find anything to fill the room. After all the papers and straws were moved out, and the room cleaned, Akio went into the big room and closed the door behind himself. He produced a candle and lit it up in front of the King, the Princes, and the other two young men. Then the whole room was filled with a soft, gentle, sweet light, and Akio hung his head humbly.
And for the very first time, the Princess smiled.
